Documents required for road-legal plates
To order road-legal plates in the UK you must show who you are and that you are entitled to the registration. Here is exactly what we need and how it is checked before we print.
What we check
Two things to provide
Road-legal number plates can only be supplied once you have provided two things: proof of identity and proof of entitlement to the registration. This protects against registrations being misused and is a standard part of ordering legal plates in the UK.
Proof of identity can be a driving licence or passport. Proof of entitlement is a document that shows the registration belongs to you or the vehicle, such as a V5C logbook, a V5C/2 new keeper slip, a new keeper supplement, or a V750 certificate of entitlement or V778 retention document for a private registration that is assigned or retained.
We review these before production begins. If anything is missing or unclear, we will ask before we make the plates.

Why do you need my documents?
Road-legal plates can only be supplied to someone who can prove their identity and their entitlement to the registration. Checking these helps prevent registrations being misused and is a normal part of ordering legal plates in the UK.
What counts as proof of entitlement?
A document showing the registration belongs to you or the vehicle, such as a V5C logbook, a V5C/2 new keeper slip, a new keeper supplement, or a V750 or V778 certificate for a retained or assigned private registration.
I have just bought the car and have no V5C yet. What can I use?
The new keeper slip (V5C/2) or new keeper supplement given to you at purchase is accepted as proof of entitlement while the full V5C is being updated. Get in touch if you are unsure what you have.
Do I need documents for show plates?
Show plates are for off-road, show and display use only and are not road legal. The full identity and entitlement document checks apply to road-legal plates. See show plates for how they differ.
