In the UK, businesses that sell road-legal number plates are required to be registered number plate suppliers. The aim of the scheme is to make sure plates showing a registration are only supplied to people who are entitled to that registration, which helps reduce the misuse of plates.
As part of this, a registered supplier must record the customer's proof of identity and proof of entitlement to the registration before producing road-legal plates, and keep appropriate records of the plates supplied.
