2D vs 3D gel vs 4D vs 4D gel: number plate finishes compared
Four finishes, four different looks. Here is how 2D, 3D gel, 4D and 4D gel plates are made, how they look on the car, and which stay road legal when made to the right standard.
The quick version
The main difference between these finishes is the character itself: how it is printed, how it sits on the acrylic and how much depth it has. A 2D plate has flat printed characters. A 3D gel plate has a clear domed resin coating over each character. A 4D plate uses laser-cut raised acrylic letters. A 4D gel plate combines raised acrylic with a gel-domed top for extra shine and depth.

2D standard plates
The 2D plate is the original road plate: flat black characters printed straight onto reflective acrylic. There is no raised element, which makes it the most affordable, the easiest to keep clean and the most likely to pass an MOT without question when the font and spacing are correct. If you want a no-fuss, classic plate, this is it. See standard 2D plates.
3D gel plates
3D gel plates take a printed character and add a clear, domed resin layer over the top. That dome gives a glossy, slightly raised appearance that catches the light, while keeping the characters a single solid black colour. They look more premium than flat 2D but are not the same as true raised 4D letters. See 3D gel plates.
4D plates
4D plates use individual letters laser-cut from solid acrylic (commonly around 3mm thick) and bonded to the plate face. The result is genuine, crisp raised edges with real depth. Because the characters are physically raised, the look is sharper and more dimensional than a gel dome. See 4D plates.
4D gel plates
4D gel combines both techniques: raised acrylic letters with a gel dome applied on top. You get the depth of 4D plus the gloss of gel, which is why it sits at the premium end. See 4D gel plates.
Finish does not change legality on its own. A 4D or 4D gel plate can be perfectly road legal when it uses the correct Charles Wright font, the right character sizing and spacing, and single solid black characters.
