"3D gel" and "4D" are two of the most popular upgrades over a flat 2D plate, and they are often confused. The simplest way to tell them apart is by how the raised characters are made: gel is a domed resin, while 4D is solid cut acrylic. Below we break down each one before you build your plate.
What is a 3D gel plate?
A 3D gel plate has characters built up from a clear polyurethane resin that is applied over the printed legend and cures into a smooth, domed shape. The result is a rounded, glossy character that catches the light and sits slightly proud of the plate surface. The doming gives a soft, premium look without hard edges. What is a 4D plate?
A 4D plate uses individual characters cut from solid acrylic — typically 3mm thick — that are bonded onto the plate. Because the letters are cut from a flat sheet, they have crisp vertical edges and a bold, blocky, uniform height. This gives a sharp, modern look that stands out clearly. And 4D gel?

Durability and cleaning
Both finishes are designed to handle everyday road use. The gel dome is sealed and resists fading, while solid acrylic 4D characters are tough and hold their shape. Common questions
Are 3D gel and 4D plates road legal?
Yes, provided they use a single solid black character colour, the correct font and spacing, and are made to BS AU 145e. Coloured or shaded characters are not road legal.
