Are 4D number plates legal in the UK?
The short answer: yes, 4D and 3D gel plates can be road legal in the UK — but only when they meet the British Standard. Get the font, sizing, spacing or colour wrong and the same plate becomes show-only.

A raised 4D plate (and a 3D gel plate) is road legal when it is manufactured to BS AU 145e, the British Standard for retroreflective number plates. What makes a plate legal is not whether the letters are raised — it is whether the plate as a whole follows the rules on font, character size, spacing, colour and reflectivity. The depth of the character does not, by itself, make a plate illegal.
Raised does not mean illegal. 4D and 4D gel plates that use the correct font, sizing and single solid black characters can be fitted to the road. It is novelty styling — wrong fonts, altered spacing or non-standard colours — that pushes a plate into show-only territory.
What makes a 4D plate road legal
To be road legal, your 4D plate needs to tick all of these:
- Correct mandatory font — the Charles Wright typeface, used exactly as specified.
- Correct character height, width and stroke thickness.
- Correct spacing between characters and the gap between groups.
- Single solid black characters — no two-tone, fade, colour or pattern on the letters.
- A compliant background: white at the front, yellow at the rear, with the correct reflective material.
- No badges, patterns or images that interfere with the registration being read.

When a 4D plate becomes show-only
