The finish

What are 3D gel number plates?

3D gel number plates have characters finished with a clear polyurethane gel resin, domed over each letter and number so they rise smoothly from the plate face. The result is a glossy, cushioned depth — rounded rather than sharp-edged — that reads as premium up close and standard-issue clean from a distance.

The plate itself is unchanged: reflective and, in road-legal mode, made to BS AU 145e with the correct font and spacing, so the raised characters remain compliant and MOT-ready.

If you want raised letters with crisp square edges instead of a smooth dome, that's a 4D number plate — laser-cut acrylic rather than gel. Want both? 4D gel number plates stack a gel crown on laser-cut letters.

Road-legal orders require proof of ID and entitlement to the registration before we print. See the documents required and our road-legal plates guidance.

Legality

Are 3D gel number plates legal?

Yes — 3D gel plates are road legal in the UK when they're made correctly. BS AU 145e, the standard in force since September 2021, allows raised characters provided the plate meets every other requirement: characters in a single shade of black, the mandated font and character dimensions, correct spacing and margins, a reflective background, and the plate permanently marked with the standard and the supplier's details.

Where gel plates go wrong is two-tone or "shadow" lettering, tinted covers, or squeezed spacing — none of which we make on a road-legal plate. As a DVLA-registered supplier, every road-legal plate we produce is built to pass the checks an MOT tester actually makes.

Why choose 3D gel

Benefits

Real depth

The domed resin lifts each character off the face for a tactile, three-dimensional look that flat plates cannot copy.

Road-legal ready

Made to BS AU 145e in road-legal mode, the raised characters stay compliant and pass an MOT.

Built to last

The gel is UV-stable and sealed, so it resists yellowing and keeps its high-gloss shine for years.

3D gel FAQ

Are 3D gel plates legal in the UK?

Yes, when made to BS AU 145e — single-shade black characters, correct font and spacing, reflective backing and proper supplier markings. Every road-legal gel plate we make meets the standard. Coloured or novelty gel is show-only.

Will 3D gel plates pass an MOT?

Correctly made ones, yes. MOT testers check the plate standard, font, spacing and condition — all things BS AU 145e-compliant gel plates are built to satisfy. What fails is two-tone lettering, tints or wrong spacing, which we don't produce on road-legal plates.

Do gel letters peel or yellow?

The resin is a hard, UV-stable polyurethane that bonds permanently to the plate face, so it resists peeling, cracking and yellowing in normal use. If a plate arrives faulty or develops a defect that's down to us, we'll put it right — see our returns policy.

Can I have 3D gel on just the rear plate?

Yes. Plates are sold individually or as pairs, and plenty of drivers mix — a printed front with a gel rear, for instance. Pick front, rear or pair in the builder.

Do 3D gel plates cause ANPR or camera problems?

No. Solid black raised characters on a reflective plate read exactly as a flat plate does. It's non-compliant plates — tinted, patterned, two-tone — that cameras struggle with.

What's the difference between 3D gel and 4D gel?

3D gel is resin domed over the character. 4D gel is a laser-cut acrylic letter with gel applied on top — sharper edges, deeper profile, glossier finish.

What documents do I need to order?

Road-legal plates need proof of identity and entitlement to the registration, uploaded after checkout. Full details on our documents required page. Show plates don't need documents.
