The finish

What are 4D gel number plates?

4D gel plates combine the two premium techniques in one character. Each letter and number starts as solid acrylic, laser-cut so it stands physically proud of the plate with sharp, square edges — that's the 4D part. A clear gel resin layer is then applied over the top of each character, adding a smooth, deep-gloss dome to the raised letter — the gel part. The result reads black-on-black with real depth: crisp geometry from the acrylic, liquid shine from the gel.

Prefer the sharp look without the gel gloss? That's 4D 3mm. Want the gel finish without the cut-acrylic edge? 3D gel. This page is for people who want both. Built in road-legal mode with the correct font, spacing and BS AU 145e marking it is fully road legal; built for show it can be styled more freely but is not for road use.

Road-legal plates require the correct font and spacing plus proof of entitlement. Check the documents required and our road-legal guidance before you order.

Legality

Are 4D gel plates road legal?

Yes — the same rules that make 4D plates legal cover 4D gel. BS AU 145e permits raised characters provided they're a single shade of black, in the required font, dimensions and spacing, on a reflective, correctly marked plate. A clear gel layer over a black character doesn't change its shade or legibility, so a properly built 4D gel plate is as legal as a printed one.

As with every raised style, legality lives or dies in the build: two-tone effects, tints and compressed spacing are what fail MOTs and attract stops — we don't put them on road-legal plates. As a DVLA-registered supplier, road legal means built to the standard, every time.

It's the detail-obsessive's plate: on a freshly detailed car in sunlight, the gel crown over cut acrylic is the difference people notice without knowing why. Compare 4D 3mm number plates and 3D gel number plates, or see the full style comparison.

Frequently asked questions

Are 4D gel plates legal in the UK?

Yes, built correctly. BS AU 145e allows raised characters, and a clear gel layer over solid black acrylic doesn't alter the shade or legibility the standard requires. Road-legal orders carry the full markings and need proof of entitlement supplied. Show-styled plates are not for road use — see our road-legal guidance.

Will 4D gel plates pass an MOT?

Properly made ones pass — the tester is checking standard markings, font, spacing and legibility, all of which compliant 4D gel meets. Non-compliant effects (two-tone, tints) are what fail, and we don't put them on road-legal plates.

Does the gel layer peel or discolour?

The gel is bonded over each character and UV-stable, so it resists lifting and clouding in normal use. If a plate arrives faulty or develops a defect that's down to us, we'll put it right — see our returns policy.

Is 4D gel worth it over 4D 3mm?

If you want the deepest gloss-black finish available on a legal plate, yes — the gel crown is the visible difference. If you prefer a sharper look without the dome, the standard 4D does it for £4 less per plate.

Can I have 4D gel on a motorbike plate?

Yes — every style we make is available across the legal size range, including motorcycle plates.

Do raised gel letters affect ANPR cameras?

No — solid black characters on reflective backing read identically to flat print. Cameras struggle with non-compliant plates, not compliant raised ones.

What documents do I need to order?

To order road-legal plates you must supply proof of identity and entitlement to the registration after checkout. Full details are on our documents required page. Show plates don't need documents.
