The finish
What are 4D number plates?
4D number plates use solid acrylic characters, laser-cut to a 3mm depth and bonded to the face of the plate — so instead of printed or gel-domed letters, each character is a physical object standing off the surface.
Edges are square and crisp, and in daylight the letters throw genuine shadow. It's the most architectural look UK plate rules allow.
The "4D" name is marketing shorthand the industry settled on: 3D came to mean gel-domed letters, so the laser-cut acrylic step up became 4D. If you prefer the smooth domed look, that's a 3D gel plate; if you want acrylic depth and a gel gloss, that's 4D gel.
Built in road-legal mode with the mandatory font, spacing and BS AU 145e marking, your 4D 3mm plate is fully road legal.
Road-legal plates require the correct font and spacing plus proof of entitlement. Check the documents required and our road-legal guidance before you order.

Legality
Are 4D number plates legal?
Yes. BS AU 145e — the British Standard every road plate must meet since September 2021 — explicitly permits raised characters. What the law cares about is that characters are a single shade of black, in the mandated font and dimensions, correctly spaced, on a reflective plate that's permanently marked with the standard and supplier details. Laser-cut acrylic ticks every box when it's built by someone who works to the standard.
The 4D plates that get cars pulled over are the ones with two-tone "carbon" faces, neon edges or tightened spacing — none of which belongs on a road-legal plate, and none of which we'll make on one. As a DVLA-registered supplier, if we sell it as road legal, it's built to pass the exact checks an MOT tester runs.

If the car is clean and modern, 4D's crisp geometry usually suits it best. Softer lines or a subtler taste, go 3D gel. Show-car finish on a road-legal plate, go 4D gel. Deeper comparison: 3D gel vs 4D explained.

Frequently asked questions
Are 4D plates legal in the UK?
Yes — BS AU 145e allows raised characters as long as they're solid black, correctly sized and spaced, on a marked reflective plate. Road-legal orders are built to that standard by a DVLA-registered supplier and need proof of entitlement. See our road-legal guidance.
Will 4D number plates pass an MOT?
Correctly made 4D plates pass. The tester checks the standard marking, font, spacing and legibility — the things ours are built around. Two-tone letters, tints and squeezed spacing fail; we don't make them on road plates.
Do 4D plates fall apart or lose letters?
Each character is laser-cut and individually bonded to the plate face. If a plate arrives faulty or a defect appears that's down to us, we'll put it right with a replacement or refund — see our returns policy.
Do 4D plates trigger ANPR problems?
No. Solid black raised characters on reflective backing read the same as printed ones. Camera trouble comes from non-compliant plates — tinted covers, patterned faces, two-tone lettering.
Can I get 4D plates for a motorbike or import?
Yes — 4D is available across every legal plate size, including motorcycle, shortened, hex and import dimensions.
What's the difference between 4D 3mm and 4D gel?
Same laser-cut acrylic letter underneath. 4D gel adds a clear gel layer over each character for a deeper, glossier finish — 3mm is the sharper version without the dome.
What documents do I need to order?
To order road-legal plates you must supply proof of identity and entitlement to the registration after checkout. Full details are on our documents required page. Show plates don't need documents.
